Coverage by vehicle

The first question in RV and powersports insurance is not the price, it is which lines apply at all. A motorhome is a motor vehicle and needs liability of its own; a towed trailer usually borrows liability from the truck; an ATV ridden only on your own land may need none. Each page sets out why.

RVs and trailers

VehicleLinesThe deciding question
Class A motorhome10A bus-sized motorhome is a vehicle and a home at once; the policy has to cover both roles, and a breakdown far from home is expensive.
Class B camper van8Built on a van chassis and driven daily by many owners, a Class B is closest to an auto policy with RV contents and campsite cover added.
Class C motorhome9A cutaway truck chassis with a cab-over bunk: rental fleets favour them, so check whether a policy covers renting it out.
Travel trailer6A towable has no engine, so liability on the road usually comes from the tow vehicle's auto policy; the trailer's own policy covers physical damage and contents.
Fifth-wheel trailer7The large towable many full-timers live in; full-timer liability and contents limits matter as much as the trailer itself.
Toy hauler6A trailer with a garage for bikes and ATVs: the cargo inside needs its own policies, which the trailer policy will not cover.

Motorcycles and powersports

VehicleLinesThe deciding question
Motorcycle7Two wheels and no crumple zone: injuries, not property damage, drive motorcycle claims, which is why UM/UIM and medical payments matter more than on a car.
ATV / UTV6Mostly ridden off-road, where an auto policy does not reach and a homeowners policy often excludes motorised vehicles off the premises.
Snowmobile5Seasonal by nature; a lay-up option keeps theft and fire cover through the summer at little cost.
Scooter / moped5Whether a small scooter needs registration and insurance depends on engine size and state; when it does, the injury exposure is the motorcycle's.
