When it matters
It pays for theft, hail, fire, flood, vandalism and animal strikes — the claims that happen while a vehicle is parked or stored.
Comprehensive covers the things that happen to a vehicle when nobody is driving it, which is most of an RV's life and much of a motorcycle's. Hail on a trailer parked in an open storage lot, a bike stolen from a driveway, a motorhome damaged by a falling branch or a flood at the campground are all comprehensive claims.
It is the one line that should stay in force all year, including while a vehicle is laid up for the winter; lay-up options are designed to suspend road coverages and keep this one. Ask whether hail or flood carry their own deductibles, and whether the address where the vehicle is stored, rather than your home address, is what the insurer rates.
The common mistake is suspending everything in winter. A stored vehicle cannot crash, but it can be stolen, flooded or hit by hail, and those are exactly the losses comprehensive pays.
Ask before you buy
- Does storage at an off-site lot change the premium or the cover?
- Is hail subject to a separate deductible?
