When it matters
It pays for aftermarket parts and equipment beyond the small amount a standard policy includes, at the value you schedule.
Standard RV and motorcycle policies include a small built-in amount for aftermarket parts and equipment. Anything beyond that — custom paint, upgraded exhaust, saddlebags, audio and navigation, solar panels and lithium batteries on an RV, a lift kit on a side-by-side — is paid only if it has been added to the policy.
The practical step is to keep receipts and photographs of every upgrade and update the scheduled amount when you add something. At claim time, an insurer will ask for proof of what was fitted and what it cost. On a heavily customised bike the equipment can be worth more than the bike itself, so the scheduled amount deserves the same attention as the vehicle value.
Owners of side-by-sides and ATVs should pay particular attention: winches, plows, light bars, roofs and upgraded wheels are added by most owners within the first season, and none of them is part of the machine as originally rated. The same is true of RV solar systems and battery banks, which can cost as much as a small car.
The common mistake is fitting parts over several seasons and never telling the insurer, so the scheduled amount still reflects the bike or RV as it left the dealer. A stolen bike with thousands in upgrades is then paid as a stock model.
Ask before you buy
- What is the built-in limit, and how is extra equipment scheduled?
- Are receipts required at claim time?
