A toy hauler is a trailer with a garage, and the toys in the garage are not covered by the trailer's policy. The ATVs, dirt bikes or side-by-sides inside need their own policies, or at least a check that their physical-damage cover applies while they are being transported.
Fuel stations and ramp doors add fire and liability exposures other trailers do not have; check that the policy does not exclude damage from the cargo itself.
Contents limits on a toy hauler are often set for a camper; raise them if you carry gear and tools as well as vehicles.
The checklist for a toy hauler
- CollisionRepairs your own vehicle after a crash with another vehicle or object, less the deductible. Lenders require it on financed RVs and bikes.
- ComprehensiveTheft, fire, hail, flood, falling objects and animal strikes. For a stored RV or a motorcycle in a shared garage, this is the coverage most likely to be used.
- Total loss replacementReplaces a new RV or bike with a new one of the same model if it is totalled within the first model years, instead of paying depreciated value.
- Vacation (campsite) liabilityLiability for injuries at your campsite while the RV is parked and used as a dwelling — the gap between auto and homeowners cover.
- Personal effectsBelongings carried in the RV: laptops, bikes on the rack, cookware, clothing. Homeowners policies often limit property away from home.
- Emergency expenseHotel, meals and transport when the RV breaks down or is damaged far from home.
Lines that depend on how you use it
These are added when the toy hauler is financed, lived in full time, stored for part of the year, or carries custom parts:
- Full-timer liabilityIt pays when someone is injured at or around the RV you live in, much as a homeowners policy would at a house.
- Storage / lay-up optionIt reduces the premium while the vehicle is stored by suspending road coverages, while comprehensive stays in force.
- Custom parts and equipmentIt pays for aftermarket parts and equipment beyond the small amount a standard policy includes, at the value you schedule.
A toy hauler usually takes its on-road liability from the tow vehicle's auto policy. Confirm that with the insurer of the truck — and confirm the truck's policy covers the trailer's weight class — before deciding the trailer needs only physical damage cover.
