When it matters
It pays medical bills for you and your passengers soon after a crash, regardless of fault, usually up to a modest limit.
Medical payments coverage pays medical bills quickly, without waiting for anyone to decide who was at fault, which makes it useful even when you also have health insurance with deductibles and co-pays. Limits are usually modest, so it is a first layer rather than the whole answer to injury costs.
In no-fault states, personal injury protection plays this role on car policies and may also cover lost wages. Motorcycles are often treated differently: several no-fault states do not require PIP on a bike, and some motorcycle policies exclude it. If you ride, confirm in writing what your policy pays for your own injuries and for a passenger, rather than assuming it mirrors your car policy.
The common mistake is assuming health insurance makes it redundant. Health plans have deductibles, networks and co-pays; medical payments pays the bills regardless and covers a passenger who may have no plan at all.
