When it matters
It pays for a brand-new replacement of the same model if the vehicle is totalled within the period the policy names.
A new RV or motorcycle loses value fastest in its first few years, so after a total loss an actual-cash-value payout can leave an owner well short of what a replacement costs — and short of the loan balance. Total loss replacement closes that gap by paying for a new vehicle of the same make and model, within the period the policy names.
The details vary more than the name suggests. Some insurers limit it to the original owner, some to the first few model years, some to vehicles bought new rather than used. Read the definition, compare it with the loan term, and consider whether gap cover from the lender would serve the same purpose more cheaply.
The common mistake is assuming it applies for the whole life of the loan. Most versions end after a few model years, often well before a long RV loan is paid off.
Ask before you buy
- For how many model years after purchase does it apply?
- Does it require the original owner?
