When it matters

It reduces the premium while the vehicle is stored by suspending road coverages, while comprehensive stays in force.

Many RVs and motorcycles spend months of every year parked. A lay-up or storage option lowers the premium for those months by suspending the coverages that only matter on the road — liability, collision, UM/UIM — while keeping comprehensive in force against theft, fire and weather.

The mechanics matter: some insurers switch automatically on fixed dates, others need a call before and after. Riding or driving even once during a lay-up period can leave you without liability cover, so it is a saving for vehicles that are genuinely put away, not for those used on the odd warm weekend.

Lay-up works best alongside a written storage plan: where the vehicle is kept, who has access, and when it will be back on the road. Insurers rate the storage address, and a secure indoor facility is rated differently from a driveway or an open lot.

The common mistake is taking a short ride during the lay-up months. Without liability in force, even a short trip to a shop can leave the rider uninsured on the road.
