Motorcycle and RV insurance in Illinois

172 motorcyclists died on Illinois roads in 2023, among 275,804 registered motorcycles — 6.2 deaths per 10,000 bikes, below the national 6.7 and number 31 of 51. That is mid-table: ordinary for the country, which still means every rider here carries a real risk of injury that a policy should be built around.

The helmet law in Illinois

Illinois is one of 3 states with no motorcycle helmet law for riders of any age. Of the riders killed here in 2023 whose helmet use was known, 40% were wearing one, against 90% in all-rider-law states. A helmet is not an insurance requirement, but head injuries are the most expensive motorcycle claims, which is why medical payments and UM/UIM limits matter most where helmet use is lowest.

What this means for a rider's policy

In a mid-table state the balance is even: carry UM/UIM and medical payments at sensible limits, and decide collision and comprehensive on what the bike is worth and whether it is financed. The motorcycle page takes each line in turn.

Riders in Illinois with the closest death rates are in Idaho (6), New Jersey (6.4), Rhode Island (6.5).

RVs and trailers in Illinois

RV insurance rules are mostly the same from state to state: a motorhome needs the state's auto liability like any car; a towable trailer usually takes its on-road liability from the tow vehicle's policy, so the trailer's own policy is about physical damage and contents. What changes with Illinois's climate and roads is which claims are likely — hail and storms for trailers stored outdoors, breakdowns far from service on long-distance trips. Illinois's minimum auto liability limits are set by state law and are not printed here (see methodology); check them with the state before buying a minimum-limits policy.
